Roberts Public School is located in the heart of Roberts, Montana. The town of Roberts was established in 1893 and is a small, rural, ranching community located on Rock Creek, approximately 40 miles southwest of the state's largest city - Billings. It lies in the valley of the Beartooth Mountains, which are a very breath-taking attraction from the slopes of Red Lodge Mountain Resort.
Roberts began as an early railroad station called Merritt. The name was changed to Roberts after it was discovered that another Montana town had the same name, causing confusion. There are two versions of who the town was actually named after. The first was in honor of mail clerk, Frank Roberts, who did the mail route for the Northern Pacific Railroad between Billings and Red Lodge. The other version honors W. Milnor Roberts, a Northern Pacific survey engineer. Ironically, his daughter - Annie Gibson Roberts - married a young man by the name of G.W. Yates, who died alongside Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer at the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
Although the actual town is small at 200 people, the school district encompasses a wide area. The School District employs 15 full-time teachers, one school counselor, one secretary, two cooks, two custodians, a District Clerk, a Superintendent of Schools and a five-member Board of Trustees.. The school district services 60 high school students (38 boys, 22 girls); 28 jr high students (16 boys, 12 girls); and 57 elementary students (29 boys, 28 girls); or a total of 145 in grades K-12 (April 22, 2005).
Roberts High School has
been named by the Montana High School Association as "Academic
Excellence Champions" both in 1997-98 and 1998-99, and were runnerup in
1999-00. We are very proud that our high school students have
maintained a very high grade point average, while participating heavily
in extra-curricular activities.
In 2003 our boys
basketball team recorded a perfect 27-0 record, winning the Class C
State Championship; In 2004 our football team recorded an 11-1 record,
placing 2nd in the state in only the 4th year of organized football at
the school, and our Business Professionals of America organization
qualified nine students for the National Competition in Anaheim,
California.
Stop by and see our
wonderful little school if you get into our area. We are very
proud of our school and the education we provide to our students!
